Stephen Crane is an American poet, prosaist, a newspaper reporter, representative of the school of impressionism in literature. Throughout his short life (he died before reaching the age of thirty), he created six novels, two books of verse, more than a hundred stories and sketches. In his writing Stephen Crane describes reality in the terms of a well-known triad: a lone person, an indifferent universe and a feeling of confrontation arising between them. He exerted great influence on the generations to come of the poets, novelists and short-story writers, such as E. Hemingway, W. Faulkner, T. Dreiser and others. The collection comprises some of the best stories by Stephen Crane which entered the gold reserves of American literature.
