Victron 140A Battery Isolator Argodiode 140-3AC: High-Efficiency Schottky Diode Battery Isolator for Dual and Multi-Bank Charging

Reliable Simultaneous Charging Without Battery Interconnection

The Victron 140A Battery Isolator Argodiode 140-3AC is a robust diode battery isolator engineered to enable simultaneous charging of 3 separate battery banks from a single alternator, without electrically connecting the batteries together. This ensures that discharging an accessory or auxiliary battery—such as a house bank in a caravan, boat, or 4WD—will not drain the starter battery, preserving engine start capability and reducing the risk of being stranded. Unlike generic split-charge relays or basic isolators, this Victron unit uses advanced Schottky diode technology to minimise voltage drop, delivering more efficient charging and longer battery life.

Designed for 12V and 24V DC systems, this isolator is ideal for marine, automotive, and off-grid applications where reliable multi-battery management is critical. Its low forward voltage drop—approximately 0.3 V at low current and 0.45 V at rated output—reduces energy loss and heat generation, ensuring more of the alternator’s output reaches your batteries. This is a significant advantage over conventional silicon diode isolators, which can drop 0.7 V or more, leading to chronic undercharging and premature battery failure.

Advanced Schottky Diode Technology for Superior Performance

At the core of the Victron 140A Battery Isolator Argodiode 140-3AC are high-efficiency Schottky diodes, which provide a lower forward voltage drop compared to standard PN-junction diodes. This means less power is wasted as heat, and the alternator can operate closer to its intended voltage setpoint. The integrated voltage compensation diode allows you to fine-tune the alternator’s output voltage to offset the small remaining drop, ensuring batteries reach a full state of charge. This feature is especially valuable in systems where battery longevity and performance are paramount, such as in deep-cycle AGM or lithium battery setups.

Additionally, the Victron 140A Battery Isolator Argodiode 140-3AC includes a current-limited alternator energize input which is essential for modern alternators that require a DC voltage on the B+ terminal to initiate charging. Without this input, a diode isolator would block the return voltage, preventing the alternator from starting. The energize circuit provides a safe, controlled current to the B+ terminal when the engine run/stop switch is closed, ensuring reliable alternator activation.

Built for Demanding Environments

Victron’s Argo Diode isolators are constructed with a durable anodised aluminium heat sink that efficiently dissipates heat, allowing continuous operation at high currents without thermal throttling. The compact footprint—60 x 120 x 150 mm (2.4 x 4.7 x 5.9 in)—and light weight of 1.1 kg (2.5 lbs) make installation straightforward in tight engine bays or electrical compartments. Heavy-duty M8 Studs stud terminals ensure secure, low-resistance connections for high-current cables, while the 6.3 mm Faston connectors for compensation and energize simplify wiring.

All models are rated for mounting on non-flammable surfaces and are tested to withstand the vibration, temperature extremes, and salt-laden air common in marine and automotive environments. This rugged design reduces the risk of premature failure and electrical faults that can occur with lesser-quality isolators.

Key Features

  • Simultaneous charging of 3 battery banks from one alternator without interconnection
  • Low voltage drop Schottky diodes: ~0.3 V at low current, ~0.45 V at rated output
  • Integrated voltage compensation diode to optimise alternator output
  • Current-limited alternator energize input for modern alternators
  • Heavy-duty M8 Studs stud terminals for secure high-current connections
  • Compact, lightweight aluminium heat sink for efficient cooling
  • Suitable for 12V and 24V DC systems
  • Robust construction for marine, automotive, and off-grid use

Applications

The Victron 140A Battery Isolator Argodiode 140-3AC is an excellent choice for a wide range of dual-battery and multi-battery systems, including:

  • Marine vessels: separate starter and house battery banks
  • Caravans and motorhomes: charging auxiliary batteries while driving
  • 4WD and off-road vehicles: powering winches, fridges, and camping accessories
  • Commercial vehicles: maintaining separate battery systems for equipment
  • Off-grid solar systems: combining multiple charge sources without back-feed

Installation Considerations

When installing a diode battery isolator, it is important to account for the slight voltage drop across the diodes. The integrated compensation diode can be used to adjust the alternator’s voltage regulator, but in some systems, additional wiring modifications may be required. For optimal battery health and charging performance, consult the Victron ‘Energy Unlimited’ book or seek advice from a qualified auto electrician or marine installer. Proper cable sizing and termination are critical to minimise additional voltage losses and ensure safe, reliable operation.

Upgrade your battery management system with the Victron 140A Battery Isolator Argodiode 140-3AC and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with Victron’s proven reliability and engineering excellence. Whether you’re outfitting a bluewater cruiser, a remote-area tourer, or a commercial fleet vehicle, this isolator delivers the performance and durability you need to keep all your batteries charged and ready.

Anker support comes through
Update: Anker support contacted me and provided a new unit. On this one, the video works fine, both via HDMI and DisplayPort. I'm much happier now that the unit, which I do like, works properly. There is still one video-related quirk that can be annoying, though, if you often unplug the external monitor from the hub but leave the hub connected to the computer. When I unplug the external monitor from the hub, the hub doesn't tell the computer that the monitor is no longer connected (the same thing happened with the original faulty unit). Since the external monitor is my primary monitor when connected, this leads to an irritating set of steps ending up with disconnecting the hub. I reported this issue to Anker support and they forwarded it to their engineering group. Initial review: I like the form factor and the many connection options. They all work fine EXCEPT that the video (whether DisplayPort or HDMI) keeps dropping out. The computer (MacBook Pro M1 14" running MacOS 13.0.1) thinks the external monitor is there, but nothing shows on the screen for a few seconds, then it comes back on, then off again. Anker support says to try updating the firmware, but to do that requires a Windows computer with a USB-C port. I do not have access to such a machine, so I'm stuck. Since one of the primary reasons I want a hub is to handle the video, I have to return the unit. This is a real disappointment since I otherwise have been very happy with Anker products.

Incredible Quality, Incredible Results!!
AMAZING!! I use my Samsung Z Fold with a Maono Podcast Soundboard for podcasting. Having the phone charge from the soundboard power passthrough was inadequate to keep the phone charged, and generated "noise" in the path. I got the Anker 565 USB-C hub, and routed the power and signal through the Anker hub. WOW!! My phone remains fully charged throughout the podcast, there is ZERO "noise" in the signal, and I can actually do more than ever expected! The quality of Anker products has been proven with me Over and Over with every single product I have purchased. From high-end 240w USB-C cords, to Power Banks, Power Blocks, Bluetooth Earbuds & Headphones, across the board; I have never been disappointed! I highly recommend Anker, and specifically the Anker 565 USB-C hub!!

Versatile with all the ports you’re looking for.
Compact and really expands your options. I was using one of the ports on the MacBook Pro M1 for a second display and the other for an external drive and then switching back and forth with the charger. This device does all that and only uses one of the ports. Plus there are multiple USB OLD STYLE still available. No external power appears to be necessary, although since I use the Mac power supply in the dedicated power in port I’d think there’d be no issue.

Good product, I suspect, if it works. (Also Marketing Needs Improvement)
UPDATE: Nope, it's just the hub. :( It's either defective or not a good product, which is unfortunate. The stutter issue has been resolved, but I can still not use the dock to push an image to my secondary monitor (1080p). I spent several hours this evening updating drivers for my Lenovo Thinkpad E15 Gen2 (AMD) without success. FYI: This laptop DOES support PD+DP through USB-C, something I confirmed before trying to go down the USB-C route in an attempt to replace my ancient Diamond USB-A dock. An image was never sent to my second monitor, whether connected via HDMI or DP through the hub. In all cases, the monitor IS recognized by Windows, so some information is being communicated, just not an image to the monitor. During every attempt, when the monitor was first plugged in, responsiveness in Windows would stutter, lag, and generally respond slowly to my KB+M inputs until, eventually, the laptop caught up and was OK. I am highly disappointed and am considering returning both products, but the USB-C dock is definitely returning. It would be nice, but I don't need a 100W charger. My hope of replacing my current USB-A dock is diminishing at the price point I was hoping for, so we shall see if it's up to the task of the new 2K monitor I have on the way and go from there. Original: Buyer be cautioned: The Anker 565 USB-C also needs power for itself, which is evident if you think about it, but it's not stated anywhere that I could find, and it may not dawn on you until things aren't working quite right. Lack of power could cause many issues I've read about in reviews. The issue: Mouse movement would stutter every 5-10 seconds. Though Windows recognized my HDMI monitor in Device Manager/Display settings, no image was sent to it through the Anker hub. Current theory: So, the manufacturer's 65W USB-C charger for my laptop cannot FULLY power the hub with one connected HDMI monitor, two USBs, and Ethernet through the USB-C hub. I did not test the two USB devices (Keyboard and headset) as there was little need once the stuttering began, which was immediate. I have an Anker Nano 100W arriving tomorrow, and I will update the review once I've re-tested. Suggestion: My ask to Anker would be to *estimate* the power draw of their dock and list it somewhere with many warnings, etc. If they wanted to go above and beyond and add averages for peripherals and the like, that would be amazing, but if not, I would understand, as I'm sure that information could become dated fast. A power warning would have prompted me to consider the power charging situation, and I may gone with one of their docks (About a $100 increase) instead. But now that I'm annoyed, I'll purchase a 100W charger that I can use for my work laptop and elsewhere as needed. :) They are still getting my money, but not as much. They make amazing products, but small details like this matter to me as a consumer.
