That is how a high application force is developed which effectively avoids the annoying slipping out of the screw, i.e. the so called Cam Out effect. Feels more expensive than it is. The inside is soft enough and warm for a PNW spring and early winter. A heavy rain will eventually soak through but light to medium exposure, like walking the campus is plenty fine. Very basic and “normal” looking. Fit is true to size.
